The PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) today hosted its inaugural Public Forum for Research and Innovation. Titled “DeepSeek and Beyond”, the keynote speech was delivered by Prof. YANG Hongxia, Associate Dean (Global Engagement) of the PolyU Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences and Professor of the Department of Computing, who highlighted the latest developments in artificial intelligence (AI). The event attracted over a thousand participants, including faculty members, students, alumni, and leaders from the innovation and technology sector, as well as academics and the public. Additionally, over 390,000 viewers tuned in through the live streaming platforms.
The Forum began with a welcoming speech delivered by Prof. CHEN Qingyan, Director of PAIR and Chair Professor of Building Thermal Science of the PolyU Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering. This was followed by Prof. ZHANG Chenqi, Chair Professor of Artificial Intelligence of the PolyU Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and Director of the PolyU Shenzhen Research Institute introducing the speaker.
Prof. Zhang said, “The development of large models is at the core of competition in the AI wave. DeepSeek has demonstrated that high-performance AI models can be achieved using fewer and less advanced graphics processing units (GPUs), demonstrating that cutting-edge AI technology can be realised through the optimisation of algorithms.”
The large AI model developed by the mainland Chinese startup DeepSeek has garnered wide acclaim around the world for its low-cost, high-performance, and open-source framework, disrupting the traditional “computing power-first” logic of AI model training. At the Forum, Prof. Yang highlighted the potential of generative AI (GenAI), adding that it presents abundant opportunities for various sectors, including healthcare, finance, manufacturing, retail, media and fashion, and for applications in medical imaging analysis, fraud detection, predictive maintenance, retail inventory management, content creation, and design and marketing.
Prof. Yang also recounted the evolution of AI and shared her professional milestones with the audience, notably the development of the M6 large model, which trained a 10-trillion-parameters model using just 512 GPUs. Prof. Yang further elaborated on how her GenAI project, Co-GenAI, improves the accessibility of AI technology while minimising dependence on large-scale centralised computing resources, thereby transforming the trajectory of AI progress. This ground-breaking effort has positioned Hong Kong and the Mainland at the forefront of global advancement in GenAI.
Moderated by Prof. Zhang Chenqi, a panel discussion was also held, featuring esteemed panellists Prof. Yang Hongxia and Prof. LI Qing, Head and Chair Professor of Data Science of the PolyU Department of Computing, and Co-Director of the Research Centre for Digital Transformation of Tourism. The scholars discussed the opportunities and challenges that advancements in AI present for higher education and research. They also engaged in fruitful discussion with participants during the question-and-answer session. The topics included the application of AI in industry, the regulation of information, its impact on the employment environment and economic development, and the integration of AI technologies.
PolyU is committed to advancing AI education and research. In January 2025, the University established the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences with a vision to lead global advancements in digital transformation and AI through distinguished education, research, and knowledge transfer.

The Virtual Reality (VR) Training for Laser Cutter Operation was developed as a supplementary training tool for the PolyU Library’s technical support staff to practice and become familiar with the operation of a laser cutter. The application simulates the environment, laser cutter model, essential operational procedures, and corresponding responses of our laser cutter in service as realistically as feasible. A computer with a simplified laser cutting software interface was also built to simulate the software operation. Interactions (primarily on/off) with all other peripheral equipment, such as the ventilation system, air compressor, and earmuffs, are triggered through button clicks in an on-screen menu. The application simulates the operational procedures and corresponding reactions of the real laser cutter as closely as necessary. New technical staff members who are trained but not yet proficient with laser cutting can practice safely in an immersive environment enabled by VR technology.

This video is made by Dr. Pearl Lin and Dr. Clare Fung's project, "Great Case of Marketing in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry." A special thanks to Bao Yanli, who provided information and insights for this video. This case discusses that to celebrate the 50th anniversary of China-Spain diplomatic relations and the anniversary of its hotels in China, Gran Meliá hotels launched a campaign focused on the "Mantón de Manila", a traditional Spanish shawl with Chinese cultural origins. The campaign leveraged the heritage and craftsmanship of both countries, featuring flamenco performances, Shu embroidery, and high-end experiences at Gran Meliá hotels in China. The integrated marketing effort generated significant media coverage and social media engagement, reinforcing Gran Meliá's position as a purveyor of Spanish luxury in the Chinese market.

Dr. Tulio Maximo is an Assistant Professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design. Tulio aims to improve society collaboratively by including individuals and institutions in knowledge development. His research interests include intergenerational and inclusive design, mobility devices, sitting ergonomics, design-led social entrepreneurship, healthcare services, and inclusive education. Tulio teaches ergonomics, capstone projects, and cooperative projects and has created the elective subject Design Meets Disabilities. He has received numerous awards for his design and teaching, including the UGC Teaching Award 2022 as an Early Career Faculty Member and the Red Dot Product Design Award 2022 for the design of the Omni Study System for children living in subdivided flats. Tulio’s teaching philosophy is inspired by value creation education and universal design for learning, and he advocates empathy as a core teaching and learning strategy. In this case study of teaching good practices, Tulio share how he uses empathy as a core teaching strategy.

The lecture commenced with a warm welcome address by Prof. CHEN Qingyan, Director of PAIR, followed by a brief speaker introduction by Prof. WANG Zuankai, Associate Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU. In his presentation, Prof. Yang highlighted that urgent need for tissue/organ biomanufacturing owing to the shortage of donation for organ transplantation. He pointed out some challenges in the in vitro manufacturing of tissues/organs, particularly in relation to accurate design, precise fabrication, and functional induction, which underscore the imperative need for new methods for tissue/organ manufacturing. Next, Prof. Yang outlined the development roadmap of biomanufacturing and shared specific examples demonstrating the research progress in 3D bioprinting. In concluding his presentation, Prof. Yang shared his insights on the future direction for biomanufacturing, as well as some significant accomplishments by him and his team at Zhejiang University in the field.
A question-and-answer session moderated by Prof. Wang was followed. Both the online and on-site audience had a fruitful discussion with Prof. Yang.

They aim to deepen learning experiences by requiring students to produce multimodal submissions, revisit particular key points discussed in class, and demonstrate their understanding via hands-on quizzes and lab notebooks. Re-designing assessments within the context of generative AI is one of the most urgent challenges for universities. Might assessment re-design represent opportunities to build on key principles underpinning ‘good assessment’? Dependent on the disciplinary context, these might include iterative sequences of rich tasks; the development of student evaluative expertise; and linkages to real-world outcomes.
Effective assessment sequences are sometimes time-consuming. By reducing assessment overload, we can create much-needed space for new possibilities: increased authentic assessment; assessments that involve critical engagement with generative AI outputs; an enhanced role for digital and interactive oral assessment; teacher and student co-learning in partnerships for assessment re-design; and assessing process as well as product. The thorny issues of academic integrity and ethical use of generative AI also merit attention but should not distract from a primary focus on the development of student learning.
Generative AI raises exciting possibilities, yet there are few clear answers. In this workshop, complementary and alternative views, including those from different disciplinary perspectives will be welcomed.

The rapid development and widening availability of generative AI tools to create and refine content presents a huge opportunity to re-assess some of the key foundational assumptions and practices behind the ways that our courses are designed and delivered.
In this seminar, Dr Bates will share his views on educators’ obligations to engage with these issues, educate students (and ourselves) on the affordances and limitations of new and emerging AI tools, iteratively experiment in a space that is rapidly changing, and share the successes (and failures) of UBC colleagues.
Dr Bates will also present some practical advice for different ways in which generative AI tools may be incorporated into teaching activities and assessments and outline ways in which UBC is gearing up to support instructors in these efforts.

This CEO Report is about tapping into the psychological thought-processes of how great problem-solvers see, interpret and makes sense of being stuck with complexity and what they do (or fail to do) to progress. To uncover these underlying thinking patterns we administered a rigorous and systematic interview approach from clinical psychology called, Repertory Grid Technique (RGT). Our sample consists of fifty (50) seasoned CEOs /Executives spanning a wide range of industry sectors. Seven (7) inherent latent themes emerged from our analysis as to what are the core drivers (habits of mind) that help executives open up the alternatives whenever they find themselves stuck with complexity.
