This video was recorded at 5th Annual European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC), Tenerife 2008. The degree of automation in the management of the business process space of single enterprises and whole value chains is still unsatisfying. A key source of problems are representational heterogeneities between the various perspectives and the various stages in the life-cycles of business processes. Typical examples are incompatible representations of the managerial vs. the IT perspective, or the gap between normative modeling for compliance purposes and process execution log data. As early as in the 1990s, researchers have evaluated the potential of using ontologies for improving business process management in the context of the TOVE project; however, the impact of that work remained beyond initial expectations. Since 2005, there is now a renewed and growing interest in exploiting ontologies, of varying expressivity and focus, for advancing the state of the art in business process management, in particular in ERP-centric IT landscapes. The term "Semantic Business Process Management" has been suggested for the described branch of research in an early 2005 paper, which is now frequently cited as the first description of the overall vision. A flagship activity in the field is the European research project "SUPER", with more than a dozen premier industrial and academic partners, among them SAP, IDS Scheer, and IBM. In the past two years, substantial advancement has been made in investigating the theoretical and practical branches of this vision. However, the interdisciplinary nature of the topic requires a tight collaboration of researcher from multiple fields of, namely the BPM, SOA, Semantic Web, Semantic Web services, and Economics communities. There is a clear need for an annual event at which those communities meet, debate, challenge each others approaches, and eventually align their research efforts. Due to the strong involvement of Semantic Web researchers in the field, ESWC is the ideal target venue for this event. In this workshop, we want to bring together experts from the relevant communities and help reach agreement on a roadmap for SBPM research. We aim at bundling experiences and prototypes from the successful application of Semantic Web technology to BPM in various industries, like automotive, engineering, chemical and pharmaceutical, and services domains. The particular focus is on deriving reusable best-practices from such experiences, and to yield convincing showcases of semantic technology.

This video was recorded at 16th ACM SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD), Washington 2010. In 2009 IBM was recognized as a finalist of the INFORMS Edelman competition for its predictive modeling initiative to improve the productivity of its global salesforce and with an estimated business impact of ~ 100 Million dollars. The first component implements some traditional propensity modeling to identify new sales opportunities and is currently used by over 13,000 sales reps. The second 'wallet estimation' component is used strategically to allocate sales resources based on validated analytical estimates of revenue opportunity. In this case study we cover the key elements leading to the success including the data integration, data mining and predictive modeling, solution delivery, human guided model validation, integration of the business process and we conclude with an assessment of the bottom-line business impact.

Short discharge time from hospitals increases both bed availability and patients and families satisfaction. In this study, the Six Sigma process improvement methodology was applied to reduce patients discharge time in a cancer treatment hospital. Data on the duration of all activities, from the physician signing the discharge form to the patient leaving the treatment room, were collected through patient shadowing. These data were analyzed using detailed process maps and cause-and-effect diagrams. Fragmented and unstandardized processes and procedures and a lack of communication among the stakeholders were among the leading causes of long discharge times. Categorizing patients by their needs enabled better design of the discharge processes. Discrete event simulation was utilized as a decision support tool to test the effect of the improvements under different scenarios. Simplified and standardized processes, improved communications, and system-wide management are among the proposed improvements, which reduced patient discharge time by 54 from 216 minutes. Cultivating the necessary ownership through stakeholder analysis is an essential ingredient of sustainable improvement efforts.

This video was recorded at 16th ACM SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD), Washington 2010. Crisis Management and Disaster Recovery have gained immense importance in the wake of recent man and nature inflicted calamities. A critical problem in a crisis situation is how to efficiently discover, collect, organize, search and disseminate real-time disaster information. In this paper, we address several key problems which inhibit better information sharing and collaboration between both private and public sector participants for disaster management and recovery. We design and implement a web based prototype implementation of a Business Continuity Information Network (BCIN) system utilizing the latest advances in data mining technologies to create a user-friendly, Internet-based, information-rich service and acting as a vital part of a company's business continuity process. Specifically, information extraction is used to integrate the input data from different sources; the content recommendation engine and the report summarization module provide users personalized and brief views of the disaster information; the community generation module develops spatial clustering techniques to help users build dynamic community in disasters. Currently, BCIN has been exercised at Miami-Dade County Emergency Management.

This video was recorded at MIT World Series: Back to the Classroom 2009. Cooperation may be making us "a little bit too nice" when it comes to innovation, suggests Fiona Murray. She believes there's nothing like competition for injecting energy into the process of solving key innovation problems, whether in business or society. Murray is convinced competition make ventures "more effective, more global, more inclusive and more democratic," all important dimensions for business in a flattening world. She describes the rapidly expanding R&D expenditures of India and China, including the vast numbers of Ph.D.s these nations are producing in science and engineering. The corporate sector has found building global R&D organizations and collaborations difficult. In this challenging environment, where the advantage goes to those firms snagging the best scientists, Murray believes "prizes are complementary mechanisms" for attracting global talent. Just like historic rivalries among great artists (Nb., Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese), or the race to discover the structure of DNA, "fierce competition" can yield "dramatic productivity" and innovation, especially when the right rewards are at stake. Murray cites the 18th century competition to invent a mechanism for determining a ship's longitude, which offered a 20 thousand-pound prize. She jumps to the present, with the X Prize Foundation and its various competitions to solve engineering challenges and societal problems, such as the three-person reusable spaceship, and a 100-mpg car -- each with a $10 million prize purse. But it's not just the money. Recent studies show that prizes prove alluring when they focus efforts and resources on a problem that people are already studying, offering fame and "putting fun back into innovation." The fascination skews rational calculations, with competitors often spending well beyond the amount offered to the winner. Corporations should adopt the prize mechanism, believes Murray, to help generate new ideas (such as new applications for Google's phone); or to help solve very specific problems. Campus competitions are up markedly, she notes, which might be a distraction for students at places like MIT. Start small and inside the organization first, creating a shared bulletin board and offering small prizes, she advises, which will "generate energy." Then take competition beyond the company. And don't forget, "the work must be fun" in order to "get a richer set of people to participate.

This video was recorded at MIT World Series - 2002 TR100 Symposium. This session provides a preview of what's new since The Innovator's Dilemma. Most people are convinced that the process of innovation is inherently afflicted by random events. While this is undoubtedly true, Professor Christensen has come to believe that innovation is much less random than many have supposed. In his talk, he describes the variables that affect the probability of success, which management can capably understand and control.

The Near Beer simulation demonstrates the difficulty of managing supply with customer demand and exemplifies the Bullwhip Effect in supply chain management. In essence, the simulation will show how difficult it is to match production and supply as customer demand changes. The free, limited use, Near Beer simulation has two levels, novice and expert. The novice level provides sufficient interaction for students to attempt to match inventory with customer demand. This simulation is appropriate to use in a principles of marketing course, to supplement the class discussion, and might be introduced at the conclusion of the first class session, to be completed by the end of the week, or conclusion of the class topic discussion. Depending upon the size of the class, students can complete the simulation individually, or in small (no more than three students) teams. I prefer to assign this activity individually. The objective is to balance inventory with demand, and reduce or avoid stock-outs and over-supply of inventory. Not as easy as it sounds! The effectiveness of meeting demand is measured in how many weeks it take to reach a balanced inventory. I have had students meet demand in as little as 6 weeks, while others may take as long as 16 weeks.

This book presents the Scaling Management Framework, a model based on collected experiences from companies that have already made the journey to give software a central role within the organization. The model is unique because it suggests a holistic method to analyze and plan your journey. It simply means that you can’t just focus solely on your products or services. You also have to look closely at your processes and your organization, the way you make decisions and get things done. Inevitably, these will have to change. This book comes with a map, a compass, and suggested journeys along with selected travel stories comprising best practices and lessons learned from past digitalization journeys. Use the map to find your way in the digitalization landscape, and use the compass to find the direction of your journey. How do you transform your organization when software is becoming a critical part of your business? Software has changed the rules of the game. The world talks about the digitalization in industry and society – how the focus has shifted from producing tangible things towards software and services. This trend started many years ago, but is now affecting every company, whether it’s a software company or not. There are many companies that have already made a digitalization journey – and many are about to embark on this journey – like you.

This short course is adapted from a semester length graduate level coursetaught at MIT covering Qualitative Research Methods. This online course will focus specifically on teaching how to prepare for and conduct a conversational interview for data gathering purposes. We will also discuss the nature of qualitative research as a methodology, how it compares and differs from other forms of research, and how qualitative and quantitative research complement each other in a research project. This isthe first in a multi-part series which will be released over the coming year, which will focus on Conversational Interviewing, Data Analysis, and Constructing Theory. You might have encountered other forms of interview techniques in your studies and training. The form that we are teaching is the preferred method of Professor Silbey's, one that she has used extensively throughout her career. The goal is to construct an interview protocol such that you will be able to guide your interviewee through topics of interest to your study without bringing them up explicitly, in order to explore experiences and accounts without pointing respondents in particular directions. Not sure what an interview protocol is? No problem! You will by the end of the course.

In this course you will be introduced to the basic ideas behind the qualitative research in social science. You will learn about data collection, description, analysis and interpretation in qualitative research. Qualitative research often involves an iterative process. We will focus on the ingredients required for this process: data collection and analysis. You won't learn how to use qualitative methods by just watching video's, so we put much stress on collecting data through observation and interviewing and on analysing and interpreting the collected data in other assignments. Obviously, the most important concepts in qualitative research will be discussed, just as we will discuss quality criteria, good practices, ethics, writing some methods of analysis, and mixing methods. We hope to take away some prejudice, and enthuse many students for qualitative research.

This video was recorded at 16th ACM SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD), Washington 2010. The problem of optimally managing the collections process by taxation authorities is one of prime importance, not only for the revenue it brings but also as a means to administer a fair taxing system. The analogous problem of debt collections management in the private sector, such as banks and credit card companies, is also increasingly gaining attention. With the recent successes in the applications of data analytics and optimization to various business areas, the question arises to what extent such collections processes can be improved by use of leading edge data modeling and optimization techniques. In this paper, we propose and develop a novel approach to this problem based on the framework of constrained Markov Decision Process (MDP), and report on our experience in an actual deployment of a tax collections optimization system at New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (NYS DTF).

This video was recorded at 7th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC), Karlsruhe 2008. The documentation of Enterprise Research Planning (ERP) systems is usually (1) extremely large and (2) combines various views from the business and the technical implementation perspective. Also, a very specific vocabulary has evolved, in particular in the SAP domain (e.g. SAP Solution Maps or SAP software module names). This vocabulary is not clearly mapped to business management terminology and concepts. It is a well-known problem in practice that searching in SAP ERP documentation is difficult, because it requires in-depth knowledge of a large and proprietary terminology. We propose to use ontologies and automatic annotation of such large HTML software documentation in order to improve the usability and accessibility, namely of ERP help files. In order to achieve that, we have developed an ontology and prototype for SAP ERP 6.0. Our approach integrates concepts and lexical resources from (1) business management terminology, (2) SAP business terminology, (3) SAP system terminology, and (4) Wordnet synsets. We use standard GATE/KIM technology to annotate SAP help documentation with respective references to our ontology. Eventually, our approach consolidates the knowledge contained in the SAP help functionality at a conceptual level. This allows users to express their queries using a terminology they are familiar with, e.g. referring to general management terms. Despite a widely automated ontology construction process and a simplistic annotation strategy with minimal human intervention, we experienced convincing results. For an average query linked to an action and a topic, our technology returns more than 3 relevant resources, while a naïve term-based search returns on average only about 0.2 relevant resources.

Teaching the strategic management course can be a challenge for many professors. In most business schools, strategic management is a “capstone” course that requires students to draw on insights from various functional courses they have completed (such as marketing, finance, and accounting) in order to understand how top executives make the strategic decisions that drive whether organizations succeed or fail. Although students have taken these functional courses, many students have very little experience with major organizational choices. It is this inexperience that can undermine many students' engagement in the course. Mastering Strategic Management is designed to enhance student engagement in three innovative ways. The first is through visual adaptations of the key content in the book. It is well documented that many of today's students are visual learners. To meet students' wants and needs (and thereby create a much better teaching experience for professors), Mastering Strategic Management contains multiple graphic concept pages in ever section of every chapter of the book. Think of graphic concept pages as almost like info-graphics for key concepts in each section. This feature sets Mastering Strategic Management apart from any strategic management book on the market today. The second way the authors capture student interest through their textbook is by using a real-world company as the running example in each chapter. For example, Chapter 1 in Mastering Strategic Management utilizes Apple to harness the conceptual coverage of the chapter in a running, corporate, application to which students will relate. The third inventive way Mastering Strategic Management holds the attention of strategic management students is through the “strategy at the movies” feature in each chapter that links course concepts with a popular motion picture. In Chapter 1, for example, the authors describe how “The Social Network” illustrates intended, emergent, and realized strategies. You can expect Mastering Strategic Management to cover all of the traditional topics that standard strategic management texts cover, but in an exciting way that will assist you in engaging your students in your course. See for yourself by checking out the book online today.

This video was recorded at 7th Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC), Heraklion 2010. The mission of the Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2010) is to bring together researchers and practioners dealing with different aspects of semantics on the Web. ESWC2010 builds on the success of the former European Semantic Web Conference series, but seeks to extend its focus by engaging with other communities within and outside ICT, in which semantics can play an important role. At the same time, ESWC2010 is a truly international conference. Semantics of web content, enriched with domain theories (ontologies), data about web usage, natural language processing, etc. will enable a web that provides a qualitatively new level of functionality. It will weave together a large network of human knowledge and make this knowledge machine-processable. Various automated services, based on reasoning with metadata and ontologies, will help the users to achieve their goals by accessing and processing information in machine-understandable form. This network of knowledge systems will ultimately lead to truly intelligent systems, which will be employed for various complex decision-making tasks. Research about web semantics can benefit from ideas and cross-fertilization with many other areas: Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, Database and Information Systems, Information Retrieval, Multimedia, Distributed Systems, Social Networks, Web Engineering, and Web Science. ESWC2010 will present the latest results in research and applications in its field. The research program will be organised in targeted tracks. In addition, the conference will feature a tutorial program, system descriptions and demos, a posters track, a Ph.D. symposium and a number of collocated workshops. The calls for these events are separate and can be found on the conference Web site (http://www.eswc2010.org/).

This video was recorded at 11th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC), Boston 2012. The New York Times committment to Linked Data began over 160 years ago. Starting in 1851, The New York Times has always catalogued its archival articles using a controlled vocabulary of people, places, organizations and descriptors. In 2009 The New York Times started publishing this vocabulary as linked data using semantic web standards. In 2011 The Times announced the launch of several RESTful Semantic APIs. And in late 2012 and early 2013, The Times will migrate its entire process for vocabulary management to a system designed around the principles of Linked Data. In my remarks, I will survey the history of Semantic publishing at The New York Times, outline our semantic strategy, detail the business-case for linked data at The Times and provide an in-depth explanation of our new vocabulary management system.

Many of today’s global challenges require tech-driven solutions — climate change, the growth of the world population, cyber security, the increasing demand for scarce resources, digitalization, the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. With this in mind, it is no surprise that one fourth of the CEOs of the world’s 100 largest corporations have an engineering degree. Solving these global problems requires leaders who, in the first place, are comfortable with technology, models and quantitative analyses — Leaders who see systems instead of isolated problems. However, simply understanding technology is not enough. Successful leaders today must have both the ideas and the know-how to put these ideas into action by working collaboratively with others, winning their hearts and minds. We need leaders who know how to seize opportunities in a networked world, and can mobilize people and other stakeholders for large-scale change. Leaders who lead fulfilling lives and who are able to move themselves and others from the ‘me’ to the ‘we’. Leaders who are long-term oriented and who deliver economic profit, while also making positive contributions to society and the environment. We call these leaders ‘sustainable leaders’. This course has three parts: - In the first part, you will explore the context that leaders are facing, building an understanding of the complexities of global and business challenges. You will discover the ambiguities and the many stakeholders that leaders must consider when making their choices. You will get a sense of effective leadership practices. - In the second part, you will discover your “who am I” through personal and group exercises. You will create a “Personal Charter” that can serve as a life-long guide, helping you, as a leader, to make important choices in your personal and professional life. - In the third part, we will bring the knowledge of the context and yourself together. We will translate the insights of this course into a leadership model and you will discover what sustainable leaders do. We will offer you frameworks to help you make your own career choices. We will finally help you to ‘sell’ yourself as a leader.

Imagine that you are a bank and a main part of your daily business is to lend money. Unfortunately, lending money is a risky business – there is no 100% guarantee that you will get all your money back. If the borrower defaults, you will face losses in your portfolio. Or, in a bit less extreme scenario, if the credit quality of your counterparty deteriorates according to some rating system, the loan will become more risky. These are typical situations in which credit risk manifests itself. According to the Basel Accord, a global regulation framework for financial institutions, credit risk is one of the three fundamental risks a bank or any other regulated financial institution has to face when operating in the markets (the two other risks being market risk and operational risk). As the 2008 financial crisis has shown us, a correct understanding of credit risk and the ability to manage it are fundamental in today’s world. This course offers you an introduction to credit risk modelling and hedging. We will approach credit risk from the point of view of banks, but most of the tools and models we will overview can be beneficial at the corporate level as well. At the end of the course, you will be able to understand and correctly use the basic tools of credit risk management, both from a theoretical and, most of all, a practical point of view. This will be a quite unconventional course. For each methodology, we will analyse its strengths as well as its weaknesses. We will do this in a rigorous way, but also with fun: there is no need to be boring.

This video was recorded at 5th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC), Athens 2006. We examine research issues that arise when most information items in an enterprise can be linked to each other via short paths, implicit or explicit. In such high-recall settings, the treatment of metadata management, indexing and ranking needs new attention. Additional issues arise as to the best way to handle updates to the connections, whether on or off the transaction path. Even traditional techniques, such as classification and clustering of documents, which stand to benefit from the extra information provided by the so-called network of meaning, need to be reexamined for how best to exploit the extra information. The talk ends with an examination of some promising avenues for using high recall as a driver for the next wave of business process automation

This video was recorded at CeGD eGovernance Academy Seminar Series (SEeHealth): The Roadmap from Concept to Practice, Ljubljana 2010. The key of mutual integration of health care institutions lies in their interoperability, gathering and common utilization of data by different applications. Seemingly, imperceptible and smooth applications' integration enables an efficient mutual linkage of all departments within a single health care institution as well as horizontal and vertical linkage of more health care institutions, all with the aim of improvement of health and quality of patient's life. Health care system quality improvement needs a continuous rationalization of resources funds, which leads towards optimization of business processes and availability of all necessary information in the shortest possible period. All necessary information and data on patients must be available independently on location or time of such a necessity. The greatest obstacles for interoperability represent heterogeneous applications. Such heterogeneity can be presented by the fact that they were written in various program languages, that they are intended for utilization at different types of computers or the fact that they use various communication networks and data transfer methods. IT managers in hospitals must decide how to contribute to cross‐organizational integration and what strategy and means to choose for achieving interoperability. If a system is poor in its interoperability, any increasing functions or little changes could stop its working properly. Interoperability must be ensured at technical, semantic and process levels but also in a legislative level, where all recommendations for legal and lawful solutions are given, which remove the most frequent obstacles – human and bureaucratic factors. The Oncology Institute of Vojvodina as a referent center for oncology and a center for medical informatics signed its own Integrated hospital and business information system. The information system at the IOV consists of the following modules: 1. hospital‐clinical IS 2. laboratory IS 3. pharmaceutical IS 4. radiological IS 5. invoicing (accounting) IS 6. business IS 7. managerial IS All of these modules are mutually optimally integrated, and their interoperability at the level of communicational protocols (HL7, DICOM, internal interface), semantics (the same code‐records, rules) and legislative level (the same accounting calculations) enables the user to see all these complex modules as one system. Thus, we created necessary preconditions for our integration into information society, which is a 21st century strategy at the state level.
