"We are often faced with questions concerning our finances: Am I saving enough to put my daughter through college? How much will my investment be worth five years from now? Should I pay down my mortgage with weekly or monthly payments? The mathematics of finance allows us to answer these and similar questions. This textbook aligns with Adult Basic Education (ABE) Advanced Level Mathematics"--BCcampus website.

"This is a course in undergraduate real analysis, also known as advanced calculus. The book works for both basic courses for students who do not necessarily wish to go to graduate school and also more advanced courses that prepare students for graduate study and cover topics such as metric spaces. A prerequisite for the course is a basic proof course. This book starts with analysis on the real line, going through sequences, series, and then into continuity, the derivative, and the Riemann integral using the Darboux approach. There are plenty of available detours along the way, or you can power through toward the metric spaces in chapter 7. The philosophy is that metric spaces are absorbed much better by the students after they have gotten comfortable with basic analysis techniques in the very concrete setting of the real line. As a bonus, the book can be used both by slower-paced, more concrete courses, as well as a faster-paced, more abstract courses for future graduate students"--BCcampus website.

"This book is a continuation of Basic Analysis: Introduction to Real Analysis - Volume 1. Volume II continues into multivariable analysis, starting with differential calculus, including inverse and implicit function theorems, continuing with differentiation under the integral and path integrals, which are often not covered in a course like this, and multivariable Riemann integral. Finally, there is also a chapter on power series, Arzelà-Ascoli, Stone-Weierstrass, and Fourier series. Together, the two volumes provide enough material for several different types of year-long sequences. A student who absorbs the first volume and the first three chapters of volume II should be more than prepared for real and complex analysis courses at the graduate level"--BCcampus website.

The Climate Toolkit is a resource manual designed to help the reader navigate the complex and perplexing issue of climate change by providing tools and strategies to explore the underlying science. As such it contains a collection of activities that make use of readily available on-line resources developed by research groups and public agencies. These include web-based climate models, climate data archives, interactive atlases, policy papers, and “solution” catalogs. Unlike a standard textbook, it is designed to help readers do their own climate research and devise their own perspective rather than providing them with a script to assimilate and repeat. The activities in the manual are divided into five sections that include weather and climate basics, present climate impacts, past climate change, future change and impacts, and strategies for climate mitigation and adaptation. These are followed by three appendices which contain information about the on-line tools used in the activities in this manual; a catalog of on-line and print resources produced by research groups, government agencies, and community groups involved in climate and sustainability work; and background on the history and key players in the international climate negotiation process. Though originally aimed at undergraduate non-science majors, the manual has been broadened for a wider audience in non-academic settings like community groups, service organizations, workplace study groups, and faith communities.

The BIIG problem-solving method is unique in that it forces us to concentrate on decoding a real-world word problem completely into meaningful parts and aids us in finding and applying the right formula to easily arrive at the correct solution. As desired, it places less emphasis on the memorization of factual detail and more emphasis on the understanding of concepts. Evidently, this method is beneficial in many ways as it aids students in honing skills in critical thinking, logical approach and attention to detail. As a method for organizing information it helps students avoid errors and sets them on a path to succeed. As long as the numbers are “buddied up” with their units, “identified” by the appropriate variables, “isolated” within the context, and the answer is presented “gourmet”, or explained in terms of the original question, finding a solution to any complex problem will become seamless, understandable and enjoyable. This innovation in science education fosters a passion for learning and serves as a foundation for a new paradigm for problem-solving in any discipline of science worldwide.

In 50 episodes, Dr. Deboki Chakravarti will teach you organic chemistry. This course is based on sophomore-level college material, covering topics from Organic Chemistry I and II. It was developed with 9 reference texts and journal articles on specialized topics in organic chemistry, in particular: Organic Chemistry texts by Brown, Foote, Iverson and Ansyln (8th ed.); Clayden, Greeves and Warren (2nd ed.); McMurry (9th ed.) By the end of this course, you will be able to: * Recognize and name the major functional groups in organic compounds * Understand the influence of molecular structure and conformation on chemical properties and reactivity * Identify the possible reactions for a given organic compound and select reasonable reaction mechanisms given the reactant structure and functional groups * Sketch a mechanism for an organic reaction, showing valid arrow-pushing and formal charges * Develop and compare synthetic routes to a target molecule from a starting compound * Interpret spectra (e.g. IR, NMR, MS, UV/vis) and understand how they are used in structure determination * Connect the chemical properties of organic compounds to their real-world applications (e.g. in polymers, medicine, and biochemistry).
