A good way to start engaging in Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is to apply for project funding to conduct rigorous educational research on learning and teaching. Each triennium, the Teaching Development Grant (TDG) and Strategic Plan Fund call for proposals. Join this session to find out what these funds usually require from applicants, and hear some tips on the do's and don'ts of preparing proposals to fit those requirements.

In this workshop, we will introduce a novel active-learning rewards-based (ALRB) approach supported by a prototype system to motivate students to be more active learners. We will describe how rubrics are assigned to different active learning pedagogies to reward students for their active engagement. The ALRB approach will be demonstrated with a supporting system and rewards will be given to the audience to show how instructors can use the ALRB approach in any face-to-face, hybrid or purely virtual environment.

In both face-to-face and online lectures, research shows positive results when active learning techniques are applied, and technology has long been used as a tool to facilitate the process. In this workshop we consider how to engage your learners with interactive approaches, leveraging technologies and tools such as Zoom, Mentimeter, uReply, PearDeck and MURAL.

The Applied Physics Department has developed a number of methodologies that permit “Out-of-Lab” experimental teaching: Remote control of automated setups housed in PolyU, Mobile apps-based labs, and an Arduino system with external portable sensors as the extension of the apps. The design and capabilities of these various methods will be introduced, and their deployment in courses are showcased. We hope to initiate discussions on possible use in other disciplines.
