The Applied Physics Department has developed a number of methodologies that permit “Out-of-Lab” experimental teaching: Remote control of automated setups housed in PolyU, Mobile apps-based labs, and an Arduino system with external portable sensors as the extension of the apps. The design and capabilities of these various methods will be introduced, and their deployment in courses are showcased. We hope to initiate discussions on possible use in other disciplines.

The CoI framework (Garrison et al., 2000) represents a process of creating a deep and meaningful learning online experience through the development of three elements: social, cognitive and teaching presence. In this session, you will apply the framework to your blended teaching. This is a showcase event on “Hybrid Teaching” (HT). Opening with a summary on the good practices, challenges and issues raised by PolyU colleagues on HT, Professor Gilly Salmon will then discuss opportunities and practice for good HT. She will describe research-based models and processes that are easily adopted by staff and lead to greater engagement and achievement for students. She will also offer evidence-based concepts that have stood the test of time but are suitable for 2021 and beyond: collaborative design, equivalence, engagement and scaffolding through the 5-stage model and e-tivities. These will be followed by Q&A and an open discussion on what PolyU can do to improve in HT.

The textile and fashion industry is in troubled times. Hong Kong is no exception. Our traditional market, the US, while difficult since 2018, has been dire in the covid pandemic. The industry is in the mist of disruptive changes brought by technological revolutions, in particular digitalization, and the retreat of globalism. But troubles always come with opportunities. Dr Henry Tan will give an overview on the outlook of the industry and his view on where opportunities are knocking.
