The rapid development and widening availability of generative AI tools to create and refine content presents a huge opportunity to re-assess some of the key foundational assumptions and practices behind the ways that our courses are designed and delivered.
In this seminar, Dr Bates will share his views on educators’ obligations to engage with these issues, educate students (and ourselves) on the affordances and limitations of new and emerging AI tools, iteratively experiment in a space that is rapidly changing, and share the successes (and failures) of UBC colleagues.
Dr Bates will also present some practical advice for different ways in which generative AI tools may be incorporated into teaching activities and assessments and outline ways in which UBC is gearing up to support instructors in these efforts.

Generative AI challenges Higher Education institutions, educators and their practices to critically re-appraise the nature of what should and could be assessed. Gen AI can support equity and enhance new assessment designs. However, it also challenges us to reconsider what is valued, who is involved and what assessment can reliably reveal. This workshop will discuss the Australian Higher Education response to generative AI and explore the opportunities and challenges in relation to assessment.

Join us online for Good Practices in Blended Learning: A Community of Inquiry (CoI) Approach to further explore how to integrate online synchronous and asynchronous activities into a structured programme. The CoI framework (Garrison et al. 2000) represents a process of creating a deep and meaningful learning online experience through the development of three interdependent elements: social, cognitive and teaching presence. In this session, you’ll apply the framework to your blended teaching. Participants in this session will be able to: 1. Explain the importance of social, cognitive and teaching presence in designing and facilitating effective blended learning 2. For online learning to be successful and enjoyable, students need to be supported through a developmental process, and the Five Stage model (Salmon, 2000) offers essential support and development to students at each stage as they build up expertise in learning online. Participants in this session will be able to: 1. Use technology as a lever to apply Chickering and Gamson's (1987) Seven Principles in blended learning and teaching 2. The internationalisation of higher education can be an exciting and rewarding process, opening up new opportunities for the entire academic community. As professionals and citizens of an increasingly connected world, all graduates of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) will require international perspectives and intercultural skills. For many faced with the task, it is difficult to know where to start and how to maintain the momentum that is needed. Given recent events, it is no surprise that PolyU and other universities are starting to place greater emphasis on Internationalisation at Home (IaH) as a means of creating alternative opportunities for global engagement. With this in mind, the University has set aside Teaching Development Grant (TDG) seed money for each department to set up its own respective project. This series of sharing sessions will briefly juxtapose the difference between Internationalisation and IaH, provide a brief guideline of expectations in support of the project proposals, and feature valuable insights from key educators who have worked with overseas partners and developed their own strategies for broadening our students' horizons.
