MOOC
The Elements of AI is a series of free online courses created by Reaktor and the University of Helsinki. We want to encourage as broad a group of people as possible to learn what AI is, what can (and can’t) be done with AI, and how to start creating AI methods. The courses combine theory with practical exercises and can be completed at your own pace.

"This book is the result of a co-design project in a class in the Masters of Education program at the University of Calgary. The course, and the resulting book, focus primarily on the safe and ethical use of technology in digital learning environments. The course was organized according to four topics based on Farrow's (2016) Framework for the Ethics of Open Education and discusses Artificial Intelligence (AI) , social networking services (SNS), 3D printing, resource sharing, adaptive learning systems, STEM, assistive technologies, admissions, and communications. In each of the nine chapters, the authors discuss the connection to the value of technology in education, and practical possibilities of learning technologies for inclusive, participatory, democratic, and pluralistic educational paradigms."--BCcampus website.

Come hear three very different examples of assessment design that fully expect students to consult GenAI. They aim to deepen learning experiences by requiring students to produce multimodal submissions, revisit particular key points discussed in class, and demonstrate their understanding via hands-on quizzes and lab notebooks. When the assessment focus changes, the assessment criteria may change accordingly, and this will be included in the workshop.

Pattern recognition has gained significant attention due to the rapid explosion of internet- and mobile-based applications. Among the various pattern recognition applications, face recognition is always being the center of attraction. With so much of unlabeled face images being captured and made available on internet (particularly on social media), conventional supervised means of classifying face images become challenging. This clearly warrants for semi-supervised classification and subspace projection. Another important concern in face recognition system is the proper and stringent evaluation of its capability. This book is edited keeping all these factors in mind. This book is composed of five chapters covering introduction, overview, semi-supervised classification, subspace projection, and evaluation techniques.

The rapid development and widening availability of generative AI tools to create and refine content presents a huge opportunity to re-assess some of the key foundational assumptions and practices behind the ways that our courses are designed and delivered.
In this seminar, Dr Bates will share his views on educators’ obligations to engage with these issues, educate students (and ourselves) on the affordances and limitations of new and emerging AI tools, iteratively experiment in a space that is rapidly changing, and share the successes (and failures) of UBC colleagues.
Dr Bates will also present some practical advice for different ways in which generative AI tools may be incorporated into teaching activities and assessments and outline ways in which UBC is gearing up to support instructors in these efforts.
Event Date: 9/8/2023
Presenter: Bates, Simon (Vice-Provost and Associate Vice-President, Teaching and Learning, Pro Tem, Professor of Teaching, Department of Physics and Astronomy, The University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada),

Generative AI challenges Higher Education institutions, educators and their practices to critically re-appraise the nature of what should and could be assessed. Gen AI can support equity and enhance new assessment designs. However, it also challenges us to reconsider what is valued, who is involved and what assessment can reliably reveal. This workshop will discuss the Australian Higher Education response to generative AI and explore the opportunities and challenges in relation to assessment.

Here's a paradox: as companies try to streamline their businesses by using artificial intelligence to make critical decisions, they may inadvertently make themselves less efficient. Business technologist Sylvain Duranton advocates for a "Human plus AI" approach -- using AI systems alongside humans, not instead of them -- and shares the specific formula companies can adopt to successfully employ AI while keeping humans in the loop.
