This database is constructed on the basis of two earlier databases developed by the Research Centre for the Humanities Computing (formerly the Humanities Computing Programme). Since the appearance of the Chinese Syllabary Pronounced according to the Dialect of Canton in 1996 and the Chinese Talking Syllabary of the Cantonese Dialect: An Electronic Repository in 1998, we have been receiving notes of gratitude from users from all over the Internet. Out of the many suggestions they made, the crucial one was the expansion of our databases from a pure syllabary structure into one which covers semantic information of the characters. In response to this suggestion of our users, in particular their concern for the semantic disambiguation of Chinese polyphonic characters, a database carrying the current title was planned. Being functionally versatile and user-friendly like its two predecessors, the current new database excels further in the following respects: This fully revised and expanded database covering the complete Big5 Chinese character set is now the most comprehensive syllabary of the Cantonese dialect on the Internet. It covers in the first place the syllabric data of four major works, namely, 1) S. L. Wong's A Chinese Syllabary Pronounced according to the Dialect of Canton, 2) Li Chomin's Lishi Zhongwen Zidian, 3) Zhou Wuji and Rao Bingcai's Guangzhou Hua Biaozunyin Zihui and 4) Richard Ho and Chu Kwok-fan's Yuehyin Zhengdu Zihui. To make up what is still missing, linguistic information of nine other major works are consulted. To take into account the linguistic reality of the Hong Kong society, vernacular pronunciation data provided by the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong are also included. Besides pronunciations, typical word-forms or vocabularies are provided for every character in this database. These word-forms are grouped with respect to the proper pronunciation(s) of the respective head characters so that users can disambiguate polyphonic characters that are phonologically ambiguous. In cases where common vocabularies are not readily available, brief remarks or explanations will be given. It supports up to seven transciption (romanization) schemes of the Cantonese dialect. Users can switch from one scheme to the other wherever necessary. When a certain head character is being featured, basic information such as pronunciation(s), homophones, vocabularies etc. are tabulated. In addition to these, further lexical information related to that particular character will also be provided for easy reference, as, for instances, internal codes (Big5 and Unicode), Cangjie input code, radical belonging , number of strokes, basic English translation, pagination of important references and hyperlinks pointing to various online resources. In the past few decades, China's cities have experienced a period of rapid development. Great changes have taken place in both urban space and urban life. With the booming of information and communications technology (ICT), ‘Big data’ such as mobile phone signaling, public transportation smart card records and ‘open data’ from commercial websites and government websites jointly promote the formation of the ‘new data environment’, thus providing a novel perspective for a better understanding of what changes have happened or are happening in China’s cities. This course combines both the new data generated for urban analysis and its research applications. The content ranges from big data acquisition, analysis, visualization and applications in the context of China’s urbanization and its city planning, to urban modeling methods and typical models, as well as the emerging trend and potential revolution of big data in urban planning. We have categorized the overall content of this online course into five sections, namely, overview, data, data processing, application, and perspective. The section of overview introduces cities in transition and describe the changing of urban space and urban life in China. The second section lists some commonly used open data and big data in the ‘new data environment’. Then, methods for data acquisition, cleaning and analysis are illustrated in data processing section. To better explain the data analysis method, the fourth part introduces several Chinese research cases to illustrate the application of these methods in urban research. Last but not least, the last section is the most future-oriented one, which is composed of some methodologies and proposals such as Data Augmented Design (DAD) and Big Model. This course, which shares experiences on big data analysis and its research application, will suit those concerning contemporary urbanizing China and its urban planning in the context of information and communication technologies.

Understanding a city as a whole, its people, components, functions, scales and dynamics, is crucial for the appropriate design and management of the urban system. While the development of cities in different parts of the world is moving in diverse directions, all estimations show that cities worldwide will change and grow strongly in the coming years. Especially in the tropics over the next 3 decades, it is expected that the number of new urban residents will increase by 3 times the population of Europe today. Yet already now, there is an extreme shortage of designers and urban planners able to understand the functioning of a city as a system, and to plan a sustainable and resilient city. To answer questions like: Which methods can contribute to the sustainable performance of a city, and how can we teach this to the next generations, the ETH Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore has produced over the last 3 years many necessary research results. “Future Cities” aims to bring these latest results to the places where they are needed most. The only way to better understand the city is by going beyond the physical appearance and by focusing on different representations, properties and impact factors of the urban system. For that reason, in this course we will explore the city as the most complex human-made “organism” with a metabolism that can be modeled in terms of stocks and flows. We will open a holistic view on existing and new cities, with a focus on Asia. Data-driven approaches for the development of the future city will be studied, based on crowdsourcing and sensing. At first, we will give an overview of the components and dynamics of the future cities, and we will show the importance of information and information architecture for the cities of the future. The course will cover the origins, state-of-the-art and applications of information architecture and simulation. “Future Cities” will provide the basis to understand, shape, plan, design, build, manage and continually adapt a city. You will learn to see the consequences of citizen science and the merging of Architecture and information space. You will be up-to-date on the latest research and development on how to better understand, create and manage the future cities for a more resilient urban world.

Cities are first and foremost built for people, and in today’s world, people produce large amounts of valuable data, thus contributing to what we call “smart cities." As almost every building and every city is a prototype, these communities are in the early stage of development and require specific attention and expertise as we advance. Smart cities, such as Zurich and Boston, consist of human-made structures or environments that are, in some capacity, monitored, metered, networked and controlled. With this functionality, combined with stationary sensors and mobile devices, data and information have become the new building materials of future cities. Using this data, citizens are now beginning to influence the design of future cities and the re-design of existing ones. In this architecture course, you will learn the basics of information cities and urban science research, as well as how dynamic behavior and citizen-driven learning differentiate the responsive city from the smart city. The cities we present and develop in this course use the stocks and flows of information as the main drivers of change. To deepen your knowledge of smart cities and give a perspective on the future of these cities, we also introduce the concept of citizen design science, a combination of citizen science, urban design, and cognitive design computing. Participants will furthermore have unique access to a design research platform for citizen design science. The intelligent use of data and information is at the core of this course, and these concepts will be the next generation of participatory design and design computing environments.

How is it different from a popular source like a newspaper or magazine article? Let's reduce the confusion on scholarly journal articles. Scholarly journals enable scholars -- experts in a particular academic field -- to communicate their research with other experts in that field through publishing articles and to stay current by reading about other scholars' work. Consequently, scholarly journals create a community of scholars who are all participating in a kind of "conversation" in that academic field. Rather than a face-to-face conversation, this is a formal conversation, which takes place over months and years through written documents. The most important part of this long term written conversation - what makes it a “scholarly” conversation, as opposed to popular - is what's called the “peer review process.” The peer review process works like this: in order for a scholar to get published in a scholarly journal, his or her expert peers must read their work and critique it. These “peer reviewers” make sure that the scholar has cited the appropriate experts in the discipline, made valid and well-supported arguments, and has written the article on a topic that is appropriate for that particular journal. This rigorous evaluation process ensures that scholarly work meets a higher standard than popular publications. So, why is this important for you? First, the information in a scholarly text has been rigorously evaluated, so it is more reliable and credible than information in popular sources. Second, reading scholarly journal articles for your papers or projects can give you insight into the ways of thinking of experts in that field. Finally, every scholarly text has extensive bibliographies that introduce you to important texts in the field, which can help you extend your research in that area. When you read the articles and books the scholar cited in her article, you are taking part in the scholarly conversation.
