Oral Inferential Comprehension Intervention Programme (#LaLYP / Curtin University)
The Oral Inferential Comprehension Intervention Programme is an evidence-based clinical and educational intervention suite hosted by Language and Literacy in Young People (#LaLYP) at Curtin University, Australia. Developed by Dr. Emily Dawes, Prof. Suze Leitão, and Assoc. Prof. Mary Claessen, this 16-session small-group book-sharing program is specifically designed to improve higher-level oral narrative comprehension and inferential reasoning in young children, particularly those with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). Validated through a randomized controlled trial (published in Child Language Teaching & Therapy), the manualized program targets critical cognitive-linguistic skills including social inference, causal reasoning, emotion processing, prediction, and text-connecting inferences during interactive shared reading. Notably, the repository includes localized language adaptations, featuring a Cantonese version translated by Assoc. Prof. Anita Wong and her research team, making it directly applicable to clinical and special education settings in Hong Kong. Serving as an invaluable open educational resource, this evidence-based intervention kit provides practical session plans, stimulus frameworks, and empirical treatment protocols for undergraduate and postgraduate students, speech-language pathologists, educational psychologists, special education teachers, and pediatric interventionists studying developmental language disorders, narrative intervention, and clinical speech therapy practice.
