In this workshop, we will introduce a novel active-learning rewards-based (ALRB) approach supported by a prototype system to motivate students to be more active learners. We will describe how rubrics are assigned to different active learning pedagogies to reward students for their active engagement. The ALRB approach will be demonstrated with a supporting system and rewards will be given to the audience to show how instructors can use the ALRB approach in any face-to-face, hybrid or purely virtual environment.

The Applied Physics Department has developed a number of methodologies that permit “Out-of-Lab” experimental teaching: Remote control of automated setups housed in PolyU, Mobile apps-based labs, and an Arduino system with external portable sensors as the extension of the apps. The design and capabilities of these various methods will be introduced, and their deployment in courses are showcased. We hope to initiate discussions on possible use in other disciplines.

This is a showcase event on “Hybrid Teaching” (HT). Opening with a summary on the good practices, challenges and issues raised by PolyU colleagues on HT, Professor Gilly Salmon will then discuss opportunities and practice for good HT. She will describe research-based models and processes that are easily adopted by staff and lead to greater engagement and achievement for students. In this course, you will explore several key issues that educators need to understand about teaching and learning in the digital age. We will look at how online learning is different from traditional methods of learning, examine how the digital practices of young people are continually changing, and explore some key considerations that need to be addressed while designing learning environments that are engaging and student-centered. We will investigate the ways in which education is evolving and, in turn, how the roles of teachers are changing in the digital world. We will review the history of online learning, and some key characteristics of successful online learning spaces. We will learn about digital literacies and how online reading and writing is different from paper-based reading and writing, and what implications this has for schooling. Finally, we will look at some key design considerations that educators need to be mindful of while working toward deeper engagement and meaningful learning experiences. This course is part of the Virtual Online Teaching (VOLT) program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. Online continuous assessments can range from totally online, which includes everything from conducting to completing the online assessment tasks in real-time, to partially online, which may only require the online submission of the assessment tasks. Join us in this teacher sharing session to learn about how different continuous assessment tasks can be supported by the online tools PolyU officially provides plus a highlight from an innovative teacher (RS) to share how he adopts one of these tools for his student occupational therapists as a part of the continuous assessment tasks in a professionally-accredited programme.
