Like other scientists, medical researchers and clinicians must be capable of presenting their work to an audience of professional peers. Unlike many scientists, however, physicians must routinely translate their sophisticated knowledge into lay terms for their own patients and for the education of the public at large. A surprising number of physicians write for less utilitarian reasons as well, choosing the narrative essay as a means of exploring the non-technical issues that emerge in their clinical practice. Over the course of the semester, we will explore the full range of writings by physicians and other health practitioners.

This course is an anthropological exploration of religions in diverse cultural and historical contexts. Our focus will be on relations of power, social order, social change, gender, and the role that religion plays in modernity, transnationalism, and globalization. We will investigate the performance of rites and rituals, and the cultural expressions of religious beliefs and practices. Through comparative and critical strategies, we will look at how religion interacts with, and is embedded in other aspects of society. In doing so, we will find religious elements in unexpected places. We will study anthropological theories of culture and religion from the classical canon, in addition to contemporary approaches, and apply them to a variety of topics. While respecting the efficacy of all systems of belief, we will think about how religions orient people to their social worlds in ways that are systematically related to historical and cultural change.

International Studies 164: Iraq Reconstruction cross listed as Political Science 159: Iraq Reconstruction Iraq is an in-conflict country. Its people live under foreign occupation and experience daily confrontations and hostilities. The country is politically unstable, nationally fragmented, and deeply divided along sectarian lines. The involvement of Iraq in several wars since 1979, thirteen years of international sanctions, and its occupation by the U.S. and its allies since April 2003 have left a physically ravaged and socially fragmented country. In this context, Iraq represents in-conflict countries such as Afghanistan, where conflict prevails and determines the social, political, and economic life of the country and its people. The main objectives of this course are as follows: To provide a brief political history of Iraq; To analyze the prospects of Iraq’s economic development; To discuss the effects of external interventions on Iraqi society; To offer students theoretical and practical tools to understand the politics behind grand projects of post-conflict and in-conflict countries reconstructing and nation-building; To present and discuss in depth diverse perspectives on the reconstruction of Iraq through a variety of lenses.

Public policy investigates what government does or, in other words, the outcomes of decisions made at local, regional, national, and international levels of governance - as well as the consequences they bring about. We explore three central, interrelated questions regarding the nature of governmental decision-making processes having as their aim the enactment, implementation, and evaluation of public policy. These are: 1) what frameworks, explanatory theories, and ways of knowing illuminate how and why certain types of policies get made? 2) What is the role of the policy analyst - an academically trained professional - in describing, understanding, predicting, and designing policies? And, 3) what are the consequences of different policy designs on: public welfare and well-being, other areas of social discourse and interaction, and the concept of democracy itself?

The conceptual structure for the course derives from the statement below that expresses the purpose of health informatics. Health informatics applies to a wide range of health-related application domains a set of methods (drawn from the informational and behavioral sciences) to create and study informational resources that support the health-related activities of people (individuals and groups) in these domains. The methods employed in health informatics derive from both the computational/informational sciences and the behavioral/social sciences. This course, as an initial immersion into the field of health informatics, will examine the domains, methods, and classes of information resources that, together, create the scaffolding of the field.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are useful for evidence-based clinical and public health practice. The widespread and growing application of systematic review methods for the synthesis of evidence on important or pressing research and clinical questions underscore the need for health-care professionals to understand and critique this research design. This course will provide a detailed description of the systematic review process, discuss the strengths and limitations of the method, and provide step-by-step guidance on how to actually perform a systematic review and meta-analysis. Specific topics to be covered include: formulation of the review question, searching of literature, quality assessment of studies, data extraction, meta-analytic methods, assessment of heterogeneity and report writing. The course will also cover statistical issues such as selection of statistical models for meta-analysis, practical examples of fixed and random effects models, best evidence syntheses (qualitative systematic reviews) as well as examples of methods to evaluate heterogeneity and publication bias. HMP 607 is the third in a three-course sequence intended to impart to generalist administrators the knowledge of finance and accounting necessary to manage health care organizations. The first course, HMP 608, covers financial accounting. The second course, HMP 606, focuses on managerial accounting topics. This third course concentrates on corporate finance topics. It aims to impart an understanding of how finance theory and practice can inform the decision-making of the health care firm. As such, HMP 607 is most appropriately considered a corporate finance course, as opposed to a course in financial markets. In addition, it will integrate corporate finance and accounting theories, institutional knowledge of health care finance, and applications to specific problems.

This video was recorded at CeGD eGovernance Academy Seminar Series (SEeHealth): The Roadmap from Concept to Practice, Ljubljana 2010. The key of mutual integration of health care institutions lies in their interoperability, gathering and common utilization of data by different applications. Seemingly, imperceptible and smooth applications' integration enables an efficient mutual linkage of all departments within a single health care institution as well as horizontal and vertical linkage of more health care institutions, all with the aim of improvement of health and quality of patient's life. Health care system quality improvement needs a continuous rationalization of resources funds, which leads towards optimization of business processes and availability of all necessary information in the shortest possible period. All necessary information and data on patients must be available independently on location or time of such a necessity. The greatest obstacles for interoperability represent heterogeneous applications. Such heterogeneity can be presented by the fact that they were written in various program languages, that they are intended for utilization at different types of computers or the fact that they use various communication networks and data transfer methods. IT managers in hospitals must decide how to contribute to cross‐organizational integration and what strategy and means to choose for achieving interoperability. If a system is poor in its interoperability, any increasing functions or little changes could stop its working properly. Interoperability must be ensured at technical, semantic and process levels but also in a legislative level, where all recommendations for legal and lawful solutions are given, which remove the most frequent obstacles – human and bureaucratic factors. The Oncology Institute of Vojvodina as a referent center for oncology and a center for medical informatics signed its own Integrated hospital and business information system. The information system at the IOV consists of the following modules: 1. hospital‐clinical IS 2. laboratory IS 3. pharmaceutical IS 4. radiological IS 5. invoicing (accounting) IS 6. business IS 7. managerial IS All of these modules are mutually optimally integrated, and their interoperability at the level of communicational protocols (HL7, DICOM, internal interface), semantics (the same code‐records, rules) and legislative level (the same accounting calculations) enables the user to see all these complex modules as one system. Thus, we created necessary preconditions for our integration into information society, which is a 21st century strategy at the state level.

Short discharge time from hospitals increases both bed availability and patients and families satisfaction. In this study, the Six Sigma process improvement methodology was applied to reduce patients discharge time in a cancer treatment hospital. Data on the duration of all activities, from the physician signing the discharge form to the patient leaving the treatment room, were collected through patient shadowing. These data were analyzed using detailed process maps and cause-and-effect diagrams. Fragmented and unstandardized processes and procedures and a lack of communication among the stakeholders were among the leading causes of long discharge times. Categorizing patients by their needs enabled better design of the discharge processes. Discrete event simulation was utilized as a decision support tool to test the effect of the improvements under different scenarios. Simplified and standardized processes, improved communications, and system-wide management are among the proposed improvements, which reduced patient discharge time by 54 from 216 minutes. Cultivating the necessary ownership through stakeholder analysis is an essential ingredient of sustainable improvement efforts.
