Can the way you speak and write today predict your future mental state, even the onset of psychosis? In this fascinating talk, neuroscientist Mariano Sigman reflects on ancient Greece and the origins of introspection to investigate how our words hint at our inner lives and details a word-mapping algorithm that could predict the development of schizophrenia. "We may be seeing in the future a very different form of mental health," Sigman says, "based on objective, quantitative and automated analysis of the words we write, of the words we say."

Being diagnosed with autism is often seen as a tragedy. But for Jac den Houting, it was the best thing that's ever happened to them. As an autistic person, concepts like the Neurodiversity paradigm, the Social Model of Disability, and the Double Empathy Problem were life-changing for Jac. In this talk, Jac combines these ideas with their own personal story to explain why we need to rethink the way that we understand autism. Jac den Houting is a research psychologist and Autistic activist in pursuit of social justice. Jac currently holds the role of Postdoctoral Research Associate at Macquarie University in Sydney, working alongside Professor Liz Pellicano. In 2015, Jac was awarded an Autism CRC scholarship to complete their PhD through the Autism Centre of Excellence at Griffith University in Brisbane. Prior to this, they gained almost 10 years’ experience as a psychologist in the criminal justice system, with the Queensland Police Service and Queensland Corrective Services. Jac was identified as Autistic at the age of 25, and is proudly neurodivergent and queer. After participating in the inaugural Future Leaders Program at the 2013 Asia Pacific Autism Conference, Jac quickly became established as a strong advocate for the Autistic community. Jac is a current member of the Autistic Self Advocacy Network of Australia and New Zealand (ASAN-AuNZ)’s Executive Committee, the Autism CRC’s Data Access Committee, Aspect’s LGBTQIA+ Autism Advisory Committee, and the Aspect Advisory Council. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

There's no better way to stop a disease than to catch and treat it early, before symptoms occur. That's the whole point of medical screening techniques like radiography, MRIs and blood tests. But there's one medium with overlooked potential for medical analysis: your breath. Technologist Julian Burschka shares the latest in the science of breath analysis -- the screening of the volatile organic compounds in your exhaled breath -- and how it could be used as a powerful tool to detect, predict and ultimately prevent disease.

The US health care system assumes many things about patients: that they can take off from work in the middle of the day, speak English, have a working telephone and a steady supply of food. Because of that, it's failing many of those who are most in need, says Mitchell Katz, CEO of the largest public health care system in the US. In this eye-opening talk, he shares stories of the challenges low-income patients face -- and how we can build a better system for all.

Short discharge time from hospitals increases both bed availability and patients and families satisfaction. In this study, the Six Sigma process improvement methodology was applied to reduce patients discharge time in a cancer treatment hospital. Data on the duration of all activities, from the physician signing the discharge form to the patient leaving the treatment room, were collected through patient shadowing. These data were analyzed using detailed process maps and cause-and-effect diagrams. Fragmented and unstandardized processes and procedures and a lack of communication among the stakeholders were among the leading causes of long discharge times. Categorizing patients by their needs enabled better design of the discharge processes. Discrete event simulation was utilized as a decision support tool to test the effect of the improvements under different scenarios. Simplified and standardized processes, improved communications, and system-wide management are among the proposed improvements, which reduced patient discharge time by 54 from 216 minutes. Cultivating the necessary ownership through stakeholder analysis is an essential ingredient of sustainable improvement efforts.

We are two sisters on a mission to demystify science with humor and relevance by creating videos, GIFs, comics, and resources. Our content is focused on high school biology (Pinky is a former high school biology teacher), though we do receive comments that some of our content is useful for intro biology courses at the college level as well. We're for anyone wanting to learn biology! We frequently remind viewers that we cannot include all of the fascinating exceptions and details in a video under 10 minutes. We like to create memorable visuals to the content, but they're not scientific illustrations. Meaning, nitrogen and carbon don't tap dance. Our illustrated cell and molecule cartoons are definitely not to scale. DNA is usually a right-handed double helix (well...there are exceptions) and it doesn't have eyes...a face...or a top hat...

This multidisciplinary resource develops topics of interest to all those who care about and for individuals with co-occurring intellectual disabilities and mental illness. Each chapter presents current evidence informed practice knowledge. Each topic is also presented with audio enabled text boxes emphasizing ‘Key Points for Caregivers.' For those who are interested in background knowledge, we provided the comprehensive literature base. And, for those interested mainly in ‘what to do,' we provided text box summaries for reading and listening.

MOOC
This course is about resonating with your experience and meaningfully engaging patients to make good decisions and to address the significance of interprofessional collaborations in health care. Service users’ experience and views across all points on health promotion, management and support services are crucial to developing optimal health care practice. Join Prof Elwynis a leader committed in Shared Decision Making (SDM) practice and research to promote high quality decision making. Taking into account the best scientific evidence available, he will explain to you how this collaborative process and the use of decision-aids help eliciting patients’ beliefs and integrating patient preferences and priorities to treatment options after thorough considerations of the trade-offs. Together, we are oriented to the interprofessional collaborative initiative that synergizes the strengths among health care allies toachieve optimal clinical practice and health outcomes. Renowned experts in various health care fields share their first hand experiences, eliciting profound insights and wisdoms about interprofessional collaborations. This is aspirational in learning to reflect, decipher, interpret and construct ways in enhancing effective coordination of care to meet health needs. Making sense of the SDM and IPC concepts and recognizing the available evidences and resources is crucial to enabling good team dynamics. Using a docu-drama, it takes you through a patient’s journey having a stroke due to his hidden assumptions in receiving treatment to atrial fibrillation (an abnormal heart rhythm). His attitude and struggles point to a challenging recovery process. Contemplate on how SDM and IPC could step in at different stages to improve health outcomes. Identifying gaps in the existing scientific evidence and services will help you to pursue influential strategies and design innovative programs or products to attain better outcomes. Your understanding and participation in this course will create positive impact over time in advancing the present health system to deliver the best possible outcomes to various stakeholders. We are excited to see your passion in affecting health decisions and determination in accomplishing excellent care delivery. Get connected with a global community of learners and simply enjoy gaining new ideas about making a difference in health care.

MOOC
The real-life stroke scenario presented in ANA101x Human Anatomy has invited vigorous discussions on whether fully recovery from a severe stroke is possible and how it could happen. The knowledge of anatomy has arisen a series of queries on body functioning that are commonly implicated in stroke. An extension of human anatomy fundamentals towards functional anatomy has formed the basis of intervention approaches for functional recovery undertaken by different healthcare professionals, which is guiding the ultimate goals of post-stroke rehabilitation program for regaining independence and quality-of-life of the individuals. Therefore, this course is particularly designed to delineate the stroke recovery process and its underlying scientific rationales.
Continuing using the same clinical case of Mr Law, this course walks you through the recovery journey, known as stroke care pathway involving multiple healthcare professionals to compose module ONE. In module TWO, intervention approaches practiced in key healthcare disciplines underpinned by the functional anatomy will be explored. Finally, the course knowledge will be assessed using an experiential approach using a set of mini case studies derived from the mainstream scenario of Mr Law.
