GRI Standards

The GRI Standards, maintained by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), constitute the world’s most widely adopted modular global framework for sustainability reporting. Developed by the Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB), these free, open-access standards enable organizations of any size, sector, or geography to systematically measure, report, and manage their impacts on the economy, environment, and society. The modular framework is structured into three interconnected series: Universal Standards (GRI 1: Foundation, GRI 2: General Disclosures, and GRI 3: Material Topics) which establish core principles and reporting boundaries; Sector Standards tailored to specific industries (e.g., agriculture, mining, oil and gas) to ensure disclosures address high-impact area challenges; and Topic Standards covering detailed economic, environmental, and social issues (e.g., climate change, waste, labor rights, anti-corruption, diversity). Grounded in double materiality and stakeholder inclusiveness, the GRI Standards provide transparent, comparable, and reliable sustainability metrics for investors, regulators, civil society, and the public. Serving as an indispensable open educational resource, this global repository is vital for undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, corporate sustainability officers, social auditors, and policymakers studying ESG disclosures, sustainable finance, corporate governance, and corporate social responsibility (CSR).
