Thematic Report on Transportation
The Thematic Report on Transportation is a thematic research publication developed under the Jockey Club Age-friendly City Project, initiated and funded by HKJC Charities Trust in partnership with major local university research centers across Hong Kong. Guided by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Age-friendly Cities framework, this report evaluates the accessibility, affordability, safety, and operational efficiency of public transportation networks serving Hong Kong’s aging population. Synthesizing large-scale quantitative surveys and qualitative focus group insights from elderly residents across various Hong Kong districts, the study evaluates major transit modes including the MTR, franchised buses, public light buses, and ferries. Key areas of investigation include vehicle access features, seat availability, priority seating compliance, driver attitudes, boarding safety, real-time arrival signage, fare concession policies, and pedestrian connectivity to transport hubs. The report outlines actionable policy recommendations and practical service improvement strategies for public transport operators and government authorities to enhance mobility, independence, and social integration among older adults. This open-access resource is essential for scholars, students, urban planners, transport specialists, and policymakers in gerontology, public policy, social work, and urban mobility.
