Using UC Berkeley as an exemplar, Prof. Koshland gave us a distinguished lecture on ‘Lighting the Way with Interdisciplinary Research since 1868’. One of the hallmarks of UC Berkeley has always been engagement of its faculty and students in research and education that expand in cross disciplines, joining on multiple approaches to address major challenges facing the world today, which is also what we are seeking to do at PAIR of PolyU. Moreover, Prof. Koshland shared with us the ways in which individuals and institutions can engage in interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary research and education and how they can be creatively intertwined.

"The "OER Toolkit for Trades Instructors: Adopting an Open Education Resource & Integrating it into a Trades Course" illustrates a snapshot of the OER adoption process. This Toolkit is designed to answer questions posed by BC Trades instructors specifically, but the steps described will also support similar projects in other disciplines and programs. "OER Mythbusting addresses the top seven myths about OER in North American higher education, as voted on my more than 100 faculty, librarians, students and other members of the OER community. This project grew out of a discussion during one of SPARC's Libraries and OER Forum monthly calls, where a group of librarians from the U.S. and Canada identified a need for better resources to address misconceptions about OER. A team of volunteers developed a poll and distributed it over email lists and social media over a two week period in July 2017. The results were then used to produce this collaboratively written document. While OER Mythbusting is not intended to be a comprehensive catalog of all myths in all contexts, our hope is that it will provide a useful resource for both OER advocates and those seeking to learn more about the topic. This volume provides readers with methods, case stories, and strategies related to Hybrid-Flexible (HyFlex) course design so that they may make decisions about using it themselves and even begin their own HyFlex course (re)design. More specifically, based on the needs identified for their course(s), readers will be able to a) determine if and how HyFlex course design could help them solve critical needs, b) take advantage of emerging opportunities to improve their education practice, enabling them to better serve more students, c) gain an awareness of the HyFlex design, d) find their own innovative HyFlex solution to their specific challenges, and e) begin the HyFlex implementation process using strategies similar to those used by instructors described in this book. The volume describes the fundamental principles of HyFlex design, explains a process for design and development, and discusses implementation factors that instructors have experienced in various higher education institutions. These factors include the drivers, the variations in implementation approaches and constraints, and the results (e.g., student scores, student satisfaction). A series of worksheets provides specific guidance that can be used by individuals or teams engaging in HyFlex design projects at their own institution. Case reports from institutions and faculty who have successfully implemented HyFlex-style courses provide a rich set of real-world stories to draw insights for a reader’s own design setting.

Join us online for Good Practices in Blended Learning: A Community of Inquiry (CoI) Approach to further explore how to integrate online synchronous and asynchronous activities into a structured programme. The CoI framework (Garrison et al. 2000) represents a process of creating a deep and meaningful learning online experience through the development of three interdependent elements: social, cognitive and teaching presence. In this session, you’ll apply the framework to your blended teaching. Participants in this session will be able to: 1. Explain the importance of social, cognitive and teaching presence in designing and facilitating effective blended learning 2. Use the CoI framework to select appropriate tools for effective blended learning 3. Use the CoI framework to design and deliver engaging activities for different stages of a blended online lecture or tutorial

Generative AI challenges Higher Education institutions, educators and their practices to critically re-appraise the nature of what should and could be assessed. Gen AI can support equity and enhance new assessment designs. However, it also challenges us to reconsider what is valued, who is involved and what assessment can reliably reveal. This workshop will discuss the Australian Higher Education response to generative AI and explore the opportunities and challenges in relation to assessment.

The rapid development and widening availability of generative AI tools to create and refine content presents a huge opportunity to re-assess some of the key foundational assumptions and practices behind the ways that our courses are designed and delivered.
In this seminar, Dr Bates will share his views on educators’ obligations to engage with these issues, educate students (and ourselves) on the affordances and limitations of new and emerging AI tools, iteratively experiment in a space that is rapidly changing, and share the successes (and failures) of UBC colleagues.
Dr Bates will also present some practical advice for different ways in which generative AI tools may be incorporated into teaching activities and assessments and outline ways in which UBC is gearing up to support instructors in these efforts.
