Case Study
A Good Flipped Classroom Case 14 from BEEE - Prof Cynthia HOU
This case study showcases the implementation of a flipped classroom model in the course "Facility Management Professional Practice" (BSE551), instructed by Professor Cynthia Hou from the Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering. It explains the pedagogical rationale for this approach and outlines its step-by-step implementation. The study highlights key best practices, including the use of micro-modules to support self-directed learning, the strategic application of Padlet across pre-class and in-class activities to foster collaboration, and the use of random student grouping to improve group dynamics. While demonstrating a positive impact on student learning, the case also provides a realistic assessment of the challenges, notably the significant increase in instructor workload and the practical difficulties involved in maintaining and updating micro-modules over time.
