Re-designing assessments within the context of generative AI is one of the most urgent challenges for universities. Might assessment re-design represent opportunities to build on key principles underpinning ‘good assessment’? Dependent on the disciplinary context, these might include iterative sequences of rich tasks; the development of student evaluative expertise; and linkages to real-world outcomes.
Effective assessment sequences are sometimes time-consuming. By reducing assessment overload, we can create much-needed space for new possibilities: increased authentic assessment; assessments that involve critical engagement with generative AI outputs; an enhanced role for digital and interactive oral assessment; teacher and student co-learning in partnerships for assessment re-design; and assessing process as well as product. The thorny issues of academic integrity and ethical use of generative AI also merit attention but should not distract from a primary focus on the development of student learning.
Generative AI raises exciting possibilities, yet there are few clear answers. In this workshop, complementary and alternative views, including those from different disciplinary perspectives will be welcomed.

This is a demo of a bell siphon I built in collaboration with a couple of engineering professors. There are certain cases where it would be nice to be able to create a siphon without any intervention, a self-priming or automatic siphon: the next level of siphonry. It's built out of an acrylic sheet and a piece of clear pipe.

Dr. Bustamante begins his talk by explaining why one would wish to study biochemical reactions at the level of a single molecule. He explains that many processes within the cell are carried out by very few molecules. By studying single molecules, it is possible to obtain details about the mechanism of a reaction that cannot be ascertained by studying a population of molecules. Bustamante goes on to describe the technique of optical tweezers and how it can be used to manipulate single molecules. His lab has successfully used this method to follow DNA transcription one molecule at a time and RNA translation one codon at a time. In both cases, single molecule studies provided detailed information about complex biochemical processes.

This is a showcase event on “Hybrid Teaching” (HT). Opening with a summary on the good practices, challenges and issues raised by PolyU colleagues on HT, Professor Gilly Salmon will then discuss opportunities and practice for good HT. She will describe research-based models and processes that are easily adopted by staff and lead to greater engagement and achievement for students. She will also offer evidence-based concepts that have stood the test of time but are suitable for 2021 and beyond: collaborative design, equivalence, engagement and scaffolding through the 5-stage model and e-tivities. These will be followed by Q&A and an open discussion on what PolyU can do to improve in HT.

This channel was created in September 2015 as a way for me to create something I could call my own. The earlier videos served to teach me how to make a video, as I have no background in filming, editing, etc. That early content was following trends of the time, learning how best to approach my lack of understanding of video.

This video gives a brief overview of this ingenious method of compressing air using only the power of water. The way a trompe harnesses the power of water to generate compressed air with no moving parts is fascinating and its use is seeing a small revival in modern days. A trompe can be useful in off-grid aquaponics and hydroponic systems that need aeration of the water. And, in fact, the inspiration for this video came from the late Bruce Leavitt, a mining engineer who pioneered the use of small trompes for aeration and treatment of mining water in remote locations without access to electricity.

Constant Air Volume System or CAV System is an all-air type HVAC system that uses constant air volume while the temperature of the supplied air is varied to achieve the desired heating or cooling. We discussed the single duct single-zone system, single duct multizone system with reheat coiled, and dual duct system. In CAV System Air handling unit fans are running at a constant speed resulting in a lot of energy consumption for supplying the air. In the Multizone reheat system, a lot of energy is consumed in heating the already cold air, so the CAV system is not energy efficient. That's CAV system is strictly restricted by many energy codes.
