This text strives to reach a median between these two approaches. First, I believe that students need to learn the theory and models to understand how economists understand the world. I also think these ideas are accessible to most students if they are explained thoroughly. This text presents numerous models in some detail, not by employing advanced mathematics, but rather by walking students through a detailed description of how a model's assumptions influence its conclusions. Second, and perhaps more important, students must learn how the models connect with the real world. I believe that theory is done primarily to guide policy. We do positive economics to help answer the normative questions; for example, what should a country do about its trade policy or its exchange rate policy? The results from models give us insights that help us answer these questions. Thus this text strives to explain why each model is interesting by connecting its results to some aspect of a current policy issue. A prime example is found in Chapter 11 "Evaluating the Controversy between Free Trade and Protectionism" of this book, which addresses the age-old question of whether countries should choose free trade or some type of selected protection. The chapter demonstrates how the results of the various models presented throughout the text contribute to our understanding of this long-standing debate.

Through market research, International Youth Culture Center was seen as too formal and wanted to break traditional impressions and extend marketing beyond professional clients. It needed to target different audiences for various business formats in the complex.To address these challenges, International Youth Culture Center identified market hotspots and strong IPs in 2014, and found that live TV shows, specifically "Running Man Brothers", were the hottest trend. By combining the conference center's highlights and the show's popularity, we successfully implemented our event marketing plan. After the program aired, International Youth Culture Center became a city-wide hotspot, achieving our marketing and budget targets.

This video was recorded at Workshop on Advanced IT Solutions and Competitiveness of SMEs, Lviv 2006. It is generally recognized that the competitiveness of SMEs in the present-day business environment ultimately relies upon effective implementation of the most up-to-date information technologies. However, the Ukrainian IT space is characterized with highly noticeable information gap between IT-saturated export-oriented software development companies and ordinary businesses or governmental agencies. The seminar has provided perfect platform for the interaction between local SMEs, communicating their IT needs, and IT service providers like Intellias, briefing on their enterprise-based IT offerings. The seminar has assembled insightful speakers from Ukrainian and international IT companies, as well as representatives from research institutions, consulting firms and IT experienced SMEs. The case studies from Western Ukrainian companies, possessing experience in implementation of IT solutions in industrial process, have illustrated emerging difficulties in aligning IT automated process with qualifications and professional level of the involved personnel. The practical aspects of introducing ERP systems for optimization of production process have been presented by Vitaly Pyasetsky (Lvivkholod public corporation) and Andriy Tsehelyk (Enzyme joint-stock company). The discussion has further focused on the international experience of the implementation of the information technologies as well as networking and partnership practices. Valuable contributions to the topic has been made by Maria-Luisa Sanseverino E4 Project Coordinator from Centro Ricerche Fiat and Patric Sitek from Bremen Institute of Industrial Technology and Applied Work Science. Particular emphasis has been placed on the E4 Project: Extended Enterprise Management in Enlarged Europe including collaboration initiatives and close involvement of the Eastern European enterprises within its framework. The discussion has been reinforced by the case study on Ivano Frankivsk business portal, assembling best practices from abroad business development agencies.

Imagine that you are a bank and a main part of your daily business is to lend money. Unfortunately, lending money is a risky business – there is no 100% guarantee that you will get all your money back. If the borrower defaults, you will face losses in your portfolio. Or, in a bit less extreme scenario, if the credit quality of your counterparty deteriorates according to some rating system, the loan will become more risky. These are typical situations in which credit risk manifests itself. According to the Basel Accord, a global regulation framework for financial institutions, credit risk is one of the three fundamental risks a bank or any other regulated financial institution has to face when operating in the markets (the two other risks being market risk and operational risk). As the 2008 financial crisis has shown us, a correct understanding of credit risk and the ability to manage it are fundamental in today’s world. This course offers you an introduction to credit risk modelling and hedging. We will approach credit risk from the point of view of banks, but most of the tools and models we will overview can be beneficial at the corporate level as well. At the end of the course, you will be able to understand and correctly use the basic tools of credit risk management, both from a theoretical and, most of all, a practical point of view. This will be a quite unconventional course. For each methodology, we will analyse its strengths as well as its weaknesses. We will do this in a rigorous way, but also with fun: there is no need to be boring.

Economic analysis was used by experts in the antitrust suit brought by the U.S. Department of Justice both to understand Microsoft's incentive to foreclose (eliminate from the market) rival Netscape and consumer behavior in the face of alleged foreclosure. Stock market analysts use economic models to forecast the profits of companies to predict the price of their stocks. When the government forecasts the budget deficit or considers a change in environmental regulations, it uses economic models. This book presents the building blocks of the models in common use by an army of economists thousands of times per day. This book, plus econometrics, provides most of the economic analysis tools to take upper division economics courses of any type.

Present value (PV) is the current value of a future sum of money or stream of cash flows given a specified rate of return. Future cash flows are discounted at the discount rate, and the higher the discount rate, the lower the present value of the future cash flows. Determining the appropriate discount rate is the key to properly valuing future cash flows, whether they be earnings or debt obligations. This text explores the laws governing the use of land. Sometimes narrowly focused, often intensely local, land use regulation may give the impression of a highly specialized field with small stakes. The text is divided into three parts: First, we will survey the ordinary, local administrative scheme of land use regulation. The cases in this section are intended to establish what that system is and what it's standards are. In the second part of the course, we will turn our attention to cases illustrating litigation attacks on the ordinary administrative scheme. The purpose here is not, as it was in the first part, to understand better the standards the administrators should apply, but to understand the constraints imposed on the contents of local laws, the procedures of enactment and permitting, and the composition of local lawmaking bodies. In the third part, we focus on the distributive concerns raised by land use regulation. The regulatory takings doctrine has gone from, literally, nothing, to wrestling to disentangle distributive concerns from substantive ones, to trying to craft either rules or standards to identify regulations that go “too far” and should be considered “takings” within the meaning of the Fifth Amendment. We will consider what the doctrine's purposes are, how it should be governed, and how it should be invoked as a procedural matter.
